Opening trends: Cinemagraphs – the moving image
While doing some research into a current project and discussing possible video formats we stumbled across a new format called cinemagraphs. These are still images that contain within themselves moving elements allowing a glimpse of time to be experienced and preserved. Cinemagraph is a very simple technique which combines images and video and when properly executed can produce some stunning effects. It was introduced by a New York fashion photographer Jamie Beck, in collaboration with motion graphics designer Kevin Burg. Since then, it’s becoming increasingly popular and many other designers have created similar forms. Cinemagraphs are extremely easy to create and are basically animated .gifs which makes them easy to use on a web sites and emailers. Below is a couple of examples of the best cinemagraphs I’ve seen.
